Introduction:

GPS stands for "Global Positioning System", a world wide, satellite based navigation system. It is operated by the U.S army and may be used by anybody for free. However, the accuracy of the position may vary depending on the location. The signals of the GPS satellites pervade glass or plastic, but not solid materials such as walls or metal. Therefore, GPS receivers work fine outdoors or in vehicles, but not in buildings or under water. However, receiption may be disturbed in vehicles with coated windows or if there are wires in the glass. Some GPS receivers have a connector for an external antenna that can be fixed outside the car to improve receiption.

The accuracy of the position indication is typically between 5 and 10 meters (15 and 30 feet). Before May 2000, the accuracy was lowered by intention. This disturbance - known as "selective availablility" (SA) - was turned off on the orders of the former president Bill Clinton, see satellite based positioning system is now available at its full potential ! (However, the SA is still active in a few countries and therefore, the accuracy not as good as possible in these areas).

Various car manufacturers already offer GPS based navigation systems. Usually these devices are connected to the audio system of the car, therefore they cannot be used stand-alone.

But there are also GPS receivers available as PCMCIA or CF cards or with a serial or USB interface. With such a device, a notebook or PDA (personal digital assistant) with at least one type II PCMCIA or CompactFlash slot or a serial or USB interface, can be turned into a mobile navigation system.

A mobile phone and a GPS receiver is a very interesting combination. With such a device, you're not only reachable (almost) anywhere, but you can also determine your current location at anytime and send this information via short messages to any SMS capable device. This might be especially useful in an emergency situation. Devices such as the NavTalk GSM can exchange their current location so that it is possible to know exactly where they are. This might be useful to manage your fleet of vehicles and to support the operation planning.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) and our answers:

Question: What is the advantage of a GPS with an electronic compass ?

Answer: A GPS shows the moving direction (heading) when travelling at a speed of about 5 km/h (3 mi/h) or more. But it cannot show the direction while stationary. A compass is required if you need to know directions while you are not moving, therefore a built-in compass is a helpful extension to a GPS device. GPS devices with built-in compasses switch automatically between the compass and the GPS to determine your heading depending on the current speed.

Question: What is the advantage of a GPS with a barometrical altimeter ?

Answer: A GPS cannot only show the current location, but also the current elevation. Most of the time, the accuracy of the position indication is better than 10 m (30 feet), often even close to 5 m (15 feet). However, the indication of the elevation might be up to three times less accurate. Additionally, when the signal reception is bad (for example in a dense forest), the accuracy of the elevation decreases faster than the accuracy of the position. If the reception of the satellites' signal is very poor, the GPS switches to the so called 2 dimensional mode, which means, the elevation indication stays at the current value. On the other hand, a barometrical altimeter measures the air pressure to determine the current elevation, it therefore does not depend on the signal of the GPS satellites. Generally speaking, the GPS provides usually a more accurate value for the absolute elevation, but the barometrical altimeter provides more accurate values for elevation changes, especially if the signal reception is sometimes poor. You can increase the accuracy of the barometrical altimeter by calibrating it periodically. In addition, you can use the barometer to record air pressure tendencies and predict weather changes. Some GPS devices even have alarms to warn about fast changes in the air pressure.

Question: What are the differences between the GARMIN StreetPilot 2610/2620 and StreetPilot C320/C330/C330s ?

The answer to this question is somewhat complex, because these 5 models have various similarities and differences.

Answer 1: The models GARMIN StreetPilot 2620, C330 and C330s have a built-in hard drive, preloaded with detailed maps of all of Europe. These devices are ready to use within all of Europe instantly, they do not require any preparation by the user. On the other hand, the models StreetPilot 2610 and C320 are equipped with a standard memory card (the 2610 with a CompactFlash card, the C320 with a SecureDigital card). These memory cards are preloaded with detailed maps of Switzerland, Austria, southern Germany, northern Italy and parts of France. These devices are ready to use within this area instantly without any further preparation by the user. To navigate outside this area, the user has to download the required detailed maps from a Windows PC to the GPS device. All detailed maps of Europe are included.
The model C330s (which replaces the model C330) has not only a built-in hard drive with preloaded detailed maps of all of Europe, but it is also equipped with a slot for an optional SecureDigital memory card. If you install an SD card, you can download additional maps to the C330s, e.g. detailed maps of eastern European countries or topographical maps of Switzerland.

Answer 2: The models StreetPilot C320/C330/C330s lack some features of the StreetPilot 2610/2620, which are:
- No recording of the travelled route (tracking)
- No support for vias (intermediate points to be reached on the way to the final destination), which means you must select each intermediate point as the destination
- No support for transferring routes from a PC to the GPS device
- No infrared remote control

Remarks:

1. The "Basemap Atlantic" includes a simple world map with the largest cities plus a base map of Europe, Africa and the Near East with many cities and the most important roads.
   
   
2. The routing speed is an indication about how fast a GPS device calculates a route to the destination, rsp. how fast it calculates a new route when the planned route is left. The number indicates how many times faster this model calculates a route compared to the reference model GARMIN StreetPilot III. For more information, see explanations about the routing speed. (A question mark in the table indicates, that we haven't measured the routing speed for this model yet)
   
   
3. The battery life time mainly depends on the type of battery used, the environment (temperature), the operation mode (normal or battery safe) and the usage of the backlight. The numbers shown above are maximum values under optimum conditions.

5. There are dedicated GPS receivers with special aviation maps. Because we don't have in depth know-how in aviation, we suggest to pilots to visit a shop dedicated to aviation.
   
   
6. Generally speaking, these GPS are well suited to be used in a car. However, for best reception, the GPS should be located as close to the windscreen as possible, which means, the distance between the driver and the receiver my be quite big and therefore, it may be hard and thus unsafe to read the display while driving.
   
   
7. This model supports landscape and portrait mode. Select the display mode in the system setup.
   
   
8. This GPS receiver has no display, which means, it cannot be used as a stand-alone device, but it must be connected to a computer (PC or PDA). The receiver computes the current position and provides the information to the computer via the serial or PC Card interface. On the later, there must be a software running, which accepts the data and uses it for further processing or displays the current position either in numbers or on a map. The cfQue 1620 and the GPS 18 come with such a navigation software.
   
   
9. Memory modules with different capacities are available as an option.
   
   
10. There is an USB memory card programmer available as an option for faster transfer of maps. All other data must be transferred over the serial interface.
    
    
11. Stores only points of interest, no maps.
