GARMIN Oregon 400t

Hand held GPS receiver with large color display with touchscreen, integrated base map, topographic map of Europe, electronic compass, barometrical altimeter, optional heart rate and cadence sensor, USB interface, slot for optional µSD memory card and auto-routing (requires a map which is available as an option).

GPSrent: You can also rent me !

The GARMIN Oregon 400t is very easy to use thanks to its touchscreen and its user friendly graphical interface. It supports multiple languages, has an integrated base map, a preloaded topographical map of Europe scale 1:100'000 (Switzerland not included), an electronic compass and a barometrical altimeter. It can receive data from an optional chest belt with a heart rate monitor and also from an optional speed and cadence sensor for bikes. The Oregon 400t has 3.72 GB built-in memory to store optional maps with even more detailed information, such as local roads, restaurants and points of interest (of which the pre-installed topographic map of Europe occupies approx. 2.25 GB). In addition, it has a slot for a standard µSD memory card. The built-in USB interface supports data exchange with a PC and it supports also wireless data exchange with other GPS units which provide wireless communication. In order to use the Oregon's auto-routing feature which computes a route from the current location to any destination, an optional map which supports routing is required, such as City Navigator Europe NT. See MapSource for a list of available maps. The very sensitive antenna provides navigation information outdoors, in a car, in a train or even in an airplane (see MapSource examples).

¹) 2D means, you must hold the device level for reliable readings. 3D stands for a tilt-compensated compass which does not require the device to be level for accurate readings.

²) The reason why Switzerland is not included in the topographical map of Europe is not, that we as a Swiss dealer want to sell a Swiss topo map to our customer, but because GARMIN and the provider of the Swiss map obviously didn't come to an agreement.

GARMIN Oregon 400t

Features:

  • Portable, easy to use, robust, waterproof to IPX-7 standards (withstands 30 minutes under water up to 1 meter (3 feet) deep).
  • Large TFT color display with background illumination (256 colors, 240x400 pixel).
  • Easy to use thanks to its touchscreen plus its user friendly, graphical interface.
  • Multilingual user interface in Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish and Turkish.
  • Integrated 12 channel GPS receiver with very sensitive built-in antenna.
  • Integrated world wide base map with countries, bodies of water, major cities and major highways.
  • Pre-loaded topographical map of Europe scale 1:100'000, but does not cover Switzerland.
  • 3.72 GB built-in memory to transfer even more detailed maps with local roads, points of interest etc. from a PC to the GPS (the pre-installed topographic map of Europe occupies approx. 2.25 GB of the built-in memory).
  • Routing speed: 7 (see GPS Routing Speed for details). An optional map which supports routing is required, such as City Navigator Europe NT.
  • Slot for standard µSD memory card. Memory cards are available as an option.
  • Electronic compass to check heading while not moving¹ (can be turned off so safe power, accuracy ±2°, resolution ±1°)
  • Barometrical altimeter for precise elevation recording², range -610..9144 m (-2000..+400t00 feet); accuracy ±3 m (10 feet), resolution ±30 cm (1 foot)
  • Heart rate monitor, requires optional chest belt with heart rate sensor. The chest belt uses a digitally coded signal, which means, once a heart beat sensor and the GPS have established a connection, the GPS will never receive a conflicting signal from another sensor. So you can exercise in close proximity to other sensors without fear of interference.
  • Speed and cadence monitor, requires optional speed and cadence sensor. Measures the number of revolutions of the back wheel and the crank arm with magnets and a wireless sensor. Like the heart rate monitor, this sensor uses a digitally coded signal. Once paired with the Oregon 400t, the GPS will never receive a conflicting signal from another sensor. So you can exercise in close proximity to other sensors without fear of interference.
  • Powered by batteries (2x AA, last about 16 h) or by an external 12 V power source, e.g. from a car's cigarette lighter (power cord available as an option)
  • Short time to first fix (TTFF³: approx. 1 seconds after a warm start, meaning there are valid coordinates of the satellites available, or approx. 30 seconds after a cold start, meaning there are no valid coordinates of the satellites available)
  • Supports the following protocols for data exchange with an external devices: NMEA 0183, GARMIN serial, Text
  • Supports WAAS (improves accuracy of position indication from typical better than 15 m (49 feet) to typical better than 3 m (10 feet))
  • Supports more than 100 different datum (coordinate systems)
  • Supports various display formats include the Swiss Grid
  • Firmware stored in Flash-Memory, can be updated by the user
  • Operating temperatures -20 .. 70°C (-4° .. 158°F)
  • USB interface (USB connection cable included)
  • Dimensions: 60x114x35 mm (2.3x4.5x1.4 inches)
  • Weight: 145 g (6.8 ounces, without batteries)
  • ¹) In order to check the heading with a GPS, a minimal movement with a speed of at least 5..8 km/h (3..5 mi/h) is required. Where no movement is not possible, a compass is needed.
  • ²) Even though a GPS provides accurate elevation information, the value slightly varies continuously. A barometrical altimeter is therefore more accurate, especially when summarizing elevation changes.
  • ³) TTFF: Time To First Fix, time until the first information about the current position is acquired.

Information for navigation:

  • 5 preset profiles (Recreational, Geocaching, Automotive, Marine, Fitness). Provides fast switching between different configuration settings of the device. Supports also user defined profiles.
